But what he said about my post is correct.
I was wrong when I suggested the actuator. That's only push button 4wd.

What the axle?? The only thing that activates these auto hubs is the axle turning in the body. There is no vacuum or electric part that is in any way connected to the hubs.

Hmm I'm still stumped. I work for AAA roadside asst. and one of the shops I do some towing to has a off-road shop also. The owner told me he'd put it up on the lift and check it out and replace the hubs if needed with manual warn hubs and only charge 1/2hr labor. said it be around $100. I don't think I can beat that.

Yeah including hubs. There's no way I could do it myself for that price.

So, how is the auto hub different from the push button 4x4 to the manual 4x4 shifter?

And if what they are saying is true, why would you need manual hubs with a manual shifter? If simply moving the manual shifter into 4x4 locks the hubs, why have manual hubs at all?

I am surprised at the low price. A set of Warn hubs runs around $100(or more) anyway, without the labor charge. You are getting a good deal, from what I can tell.

They are not different. The auto hubs on these are similar to the pull start mechanism on your lawn mower. The axle turning in the hub extends some dogs out that lock into place on the outer hub locking it in.

Because auto hubs break rather easily at that. The fastest way to break them is getting stuck and rocking your way out. The hub will lock and unlock every time you switch directions, if you spin than the hubs lock and very quickly bring the stationary tires to speed.

What I hate about the auto hubs is that the wheel has to make a couple of revolutions before the hub locks in therefore making them useless if you haven't shifted into 4wd before you get stuck. Whereas the manual locking hubs can be locked in anytime and the wheel needn't make any revolutions to engage. If you're already stuck before you shift to 4wd with the auto's the front wheel won't turn to lock them.
