Default 302 to carburated 351m questions

I have a 1987 f-150 with 302 fuel injection with a 26-np435 4 speed manual trannsmisson, and i have a 1978 f-100 with a 351m with a auto trans i am putting the 351m in the 87. I have changed the bellhousing but not the flywheel i tryed to use the 302 flywheel but starter will not catch the flywheel what do i need to do to get it to work?

I think; you need a Flywheel & Starter for a 351M with a NP 435 manual transmission.

Since the 351M is a different engine family than the smaller 302,
the diameter of the 302 flywheel may not be large enough for the starter to catch.

You didn't mention if you had tried both starters or not, but
automatic transmission starters are different than manual transmission starters.

Maybe someone else will have more info...

Any small block flexplate should work, but use the early balanced flexplate, but use one for a C6, a c4 or e4od\aode might be smaller, as far as the bell housing, what trans are you using? Most likely you have a c6 behind the 351m which does not have a removable bellhousing, and doubt you have a c4, any starter will work as long as you have the proper flywheel

I thought the 351M wouldn't bolt to the 302 tranny. While you're switching to carb, why don't you throw an 8-track in there?

Just a recap of what I said earlier:

You will need a Flywheel & Starter for a 351M (Modified)
with your NP 435 Compound low manual transmission.

Ford Automatic transmission starters are different than
Ford Manual transmission starters.
They have different part numbers from NAPA, Advance, Remy, Rayovac & Bosch.

Since the 351M is a different engine family than the small block 302,
the diameter of the 302 flywheel is not large enough for the starter to catch.

The small block 351W (Windsor) flywheel will fit a 302,
but not the large block 351 Modified as you have.

Automatic transmissions have a Flex-Plate &
Manual transmissions have a Flywheel.
