1996 F150 Exhaust Putting Out Very Hot Air
1996 F150 no power and low gas mileage. Discovered both cats clogged. Changed cats and now has great power and better gas mileage. However, within a few seconds of starting her up, the air coming out of exhaust is extremely hot. I don't want to melt down my cats again and have no idea where to start to find the problem and fix it. Any suggestions?

Dodge+Ford = always ready
my exhaust is to hot to put my hand over with a towel wrapped around my hand after about a minute if not less lol. 10x hotter then that stuff would be just catching fire next to your exhaust. its probably normal.

My other fords (Ranger, F100, Bronco II) do not do this. I don't want to melt my cats again. I am going to start with the timing and go from there. There has to be something I can do to fix it, just not sure what that could be.

If the exhaust is too hot, suggest the possibility of the fuel not being completely burned in the engine. With new cats, the combustion will continue - so perhaps look for a cherry red cat as a sign.
As mentioned above - if the spark is too late in the combustion cycle, the fuel will continue to burn as it leaves, also bringing up the chance of burning the valves, so check the timing.
Recommend to pull the codes to see if there's a problem with the O2 sensors - looking for a 'too rich' type fault.
May not hurt to toss in a can of fuel system cleaner such as SeaFoam to ensure the injectors are misting properly.

what hes getting at, is theirs a very few 96 f150s that you cant because it became completely computer controlled. i know it was a royal pain on my 96 f150, but on my 97 f250 (not OBDII or MAF) its simple.
