Default Codes

I am planning on buying a 1996 f150, and I am wondering how would I be about to check failure and engine codes on it? Would I need a computer or anything like that?

You will need a OBII code reader or run it by an Autozone and they will do it for free.

Some AutoZones no longer do checks. One near me won't check at all, another will loan you the tool so make a phone call before you drop by. However you can pick up a basic reader for about $30. It's a great thing to have on hand.

i bought a $225 code reader for $105, used it 100s of times and already payed for its self 10x over just working on friends vehicles. shows EVERYTHING, rpms, intake temp, coolant temp, MPH, voltages from random sensors like O2 sensors. everything i could ever need.

1996 is a bubble year, my 96 5.0 Explorer is OBD I, inspite all supporting literature stating OBD II. My advise, look at the self test connector and go from there. Getting a code reader in todays time is a must.

the reason your explorer isnt OBDII is because it could have been built in 95, sold in 96. my friends 2000 f250 was that way, it was made half way through 99 but it was sold and is registered as a 2000.

The ones around here will still do the check just can't clear the codes. Your right for no more that a reader cost anyone who works on their own stuff should have one.
