'87-'91 Clear Headlights

So I'm sure all you brick nose drivers are aware that the aftermarket for this front end sucks, right? Yeah, thought so. So I decided to take on a little project here to custom make some clear headlights. It only cost me a 7 dollar sheet of Lexan and the balls to rip off a headlight lens... What do you guys think? I can't get over it, to me it's like it changes the whole front of the truck into something modern!

What's lexan

Lexan is a clear plastic that's supposed to be like 250x stronger than glass. And should stand the test of time and not yellow and oxidize

Have you considered a front clip swap to open the aftermarket options more?

Moose_God 09-24-2012 03:12 AM

Looks good! Any problems with moisture getting in?

Moose_God 09-24-2012 03:16 AM

Scratch that question, just saw your other thread on it...did you use clear silicone or what?

That looks real good. Nice work.

I'm pretty sure he's going to. At least, that's the last I heard. So he can do the pre runner fenders

But dang this looks good. They're just so dang expensive I don't wanna ruin a head light.

I have. And probably will swap the clip, but I don't have the cash for it right now. That's about $700-$800 for the new clip and paint the whole truck and what not

Yup, I'm still leaning towards a front clip swap to '92 so I can run the pre runner fenders, but until I have the cash for that I'm just playing with my brick nose. If I can make it nice enough I might scratch the pre runner idea... Money haha. If I can be just as unique and have spent a fraction of the money, why not?

I've been using clear silicone this time around, and so far I have the lenses sealed into the chrome trim, but not onto the truck. That will be happening tonight. Wanted to make sure the silicone had it's full 24+ hour cure time. As it sits I'm testing for leaks by filling the lens area up and watching for where any water comes through.

This is only prototype #1, but I'm hoping I'll get the seal done well and not have to worry again.

@65Mechanic - It's actually not too expensive to do. At worst, pull 2 headlights from the junk yard. From what I've seen (taken off multiple lenses), if there was no moisture build up, the reflector is still gonna be perfect. It's like 60 bucks for a pair of headlights in my local yards.
