Is 8 to 12 MPG normal for an F-150?

I haven't checked it for engine codes yet, that's true. I don't have any dash/warning lights coming on, but since my truck is an OBD1 computer, I probably will need to buy a code reader of some sort right? Can anyone recommend a good, fairly affordable one?

I bought an Equus # 3143 off Amazon a few weeks ago for about 12.00 - 13.00 $. Where it's been so busy lately I haven't had a chance to use it yet.
All of the computerized electronic engine controls are new to me. There's a learning curve where you have to figure out where all of the sensors & actuators are on the motor and what they do. The way i see it, is that you really need to gain a good understanding of a machine before you can go to work on it. It takes time.
The main reason i suggested checking the codes is that a bad O2 sensor can kill your gas milage. If the self diagnostic gives you an error code that would be a good reason to change it out.
From what i've read the fuel injection systems that rely on Speed - Density are heavily dependent on the O2 sensor to be working right.
