Same stick on mine. Since I can't find any solid info on this, but did find numerous other posts with the same issue, I'm inclined to follow the owner's manual with 6qts. and assume that this issue stems from bad stamping of the dipsticks. I can't see every manual that I've looked at being wrong, especially having two manuals for two different year models in front of me.

I just rock whatever the dipstick says. It typically is just shy of 6 quarts.

Last evening I replaced just the oil filter and let it run for while. I just checked this morning, and the oil level is right on the full mark. I think today I'll run down to the Ford dealer and talk to them about it. Not that they will know more about it than the good people here, but may give more insight as to the dipstick fault.

Default And the winner is 6

I just got back from the Ford dealers service department which confirmed that the engines oil capacity is indeed 6 qts. with new filter, and that I have the correct dipstick according to part number. I believe he said all gas engines of that period takes the same 6qt. amount! While not able to explain the incorrect level showing on the dipstick, he did say that he has heard of it before. So, I'm assuming that we must go by what is printed in the owners manual regardless of dipstick readings.

Thank all of you for your input on this subject.

you in bc.... bud?

personally, i'd change the oil, make sure the oil level is on the stick, even if it's in the add zone after driving it... let it sit overnight, then pull the stick before ANY starting.

on another note, is it possible that (on the stick) the cap is in the wrong place? for instance, my older 67 impala has a cap on the stick, yet, it's still fairly loose and if i'm not careful, it will give me a bad reading.

My '96 4.9 is 6quarts

When I use a standard filter 6 quarts puts it exactly on the full line.
Often times though I use a heavy duty (higher capacity) filter and it will take 7 quarts.

It's not inconcievable to have a wrong dipstick, or a loose cap on a dipstick.
If the reading is 'wrong' you are better off putting in the six quarts (with filter change...who does an oil change without filter change anyway) and marking that as your full mark, rather than going by the dipstick.

We recieved 8 new frieghtliners at work back in 06/07 about six months later they were all recalled for improper dipsticks. Be it a screw up on the line, parts shortage, whatever, they built a whole lot of caterpillar engines with the wrong dipsticks.

I'll have to look into it but It might actually be 6 quarts because when I did my oil change it was right at the FULL line BEFORE I started the engine (no oil in the oil filter yet) and now its just a hair after the ADD line so I guess it is 6 quarts.

I just did my oil today, with a Quaker State QS8A oil filter and it took 5L(5.2Quarts) of oil and it was full. I used a buddies lift, so it was on level ground
