This is another major point I have about people cutting their cats. Did you ever find out why you cat were clogging or is the engine still running that poorly. It's removing the symptom and leaving the cause. A cat should never clog and should only fail after the precious metals have deteriorated. It takes some serious engine issues to blow enough junk to clog the cats.

Well that's what I meant was it looks legal. And the reason why it happened was because all the s#*^ inside it had broke apart. There was nothing wrong with my motor. It actually happened two years after a jasper motor had been installed. And how do you explain the magnaflow being brand new and clogging?

That is exactly my point. How do you explain a brand new cat being clogged when they should last 150k miles. That's like saying I took my breaks off because they wore out too fast. I know cats aren't as important as breaks but something is wrong thats making them fail. Probably the engine is running too rich causing a build up of carbon and unburned fuel. It's possible ( without looking at it but a common case ) that the old cat didn't fall apart but became soaked with fuel and actually melted. It would appear like it broke apart until you examine it. Maybe you just got a bad cat but there are no moving parts so it would be unlikely. I'm just saying you always want to know the cause of the symptoms.

either running too rich, EGR stuck open more than it should be or excessive oil consumption...

Well I assure you that I have none of those problems. My mechanic that I take it too was a ford mechanic for 15 years before he opened his own shop. I think he knows what he's talking about. Sorry that you have a "problem with people removing cats". I bet since your so Eco friendly you have a Prius as your second car.

Actually I have a 66 mustang. My problem is when people think junk just comes out of no where and clogs the exhaust. I bet your mechanic can find a reason if you ask. An obstructed exhaust is a symptom of a large problem. You learn that in Fords first training course. My instructor told me that. He's been in the auto business since the late '50s. Worked as a techn, ician for Chevrolet, Cadillac, US Army, CIA, and Ford. He was in the first class to be certifies by ASE and has held his licence since, has a smog tech and instructors licence and has run the Ford training program for almost 30 years. He also holds 2 land speed records and owns Baron Speed parts. I have been a mechanic for 12 years at a few independent shops, the Army and am finishing up my Ford certification and smog technicians license so I have some idea what I'm talking about since we are checking credentials. And what exactly do you have against something that makes you car smell better and removes gasses that cause cancer, brain damage, birth defects, breathing disorders and death without effecting performance? I bet you hate that dad gum magic egr valve that those tree hugging government types put on cars to ruin em too.

You can get a cheap cat for about $45 nowadays. In my opinion, it's no real reason not to run one. I totally agree with Warlockk. You got to make sure that engine is running correctly and not burning oil.

Oils that are high in zinc such as diesel and some high mileage oils will kill a cat if the engine is consuming oil. Bad valve stem seals, which is VERY common in our trucks will make it consume oil. But I guess in the eyes of some, it's not a "real truck" if it has the emissions equipment in tact.

I had to chuckle at the Prius comment. I have a buddy that constantly tells me I should buy a Prius when I mention gas mileage and/or emissions.

I'm def not driving it for the mileage! It has a lot of sentimental value but that's another story lol.

Congrats on your certification and I'm glad I can voice my opinion without being ridiculed. Hope that 66 runs good with cats.

Good luck Kelton on what you decide just don't tell anyone if you do remove the cat or you will be looked down upon like I am. Guess I'm just an old country boy that don't know straw from hay.

Just to be clear, my original post was that if your cat is clogging, especially after a short time you should try to find out why. There is no reason for cat failure on a good running engine. I don't know why I have to come under attack everytime I recommend people don't throw away part of their vehicle.
