Default 5.0 Alternator Upgrade.

I'm sure I've seen a post somewhere but my search came up wanting. Its time to replace my alternator and is like some more amperage. I believe the stock is only 50 amp. Does anyone know of a high output alternator that will fit the 1990 5.0? I was able to fit a 90 amp from a crown vic on my old mustang for $45 from PepBoys. Is there something like that for the truck. Is like to get at least 100 amp without the high price from Summit.

i would search as many different part stores as you can. or in google, put the amperage of alt you want and just search that way. i cant remember if it was summit or orielly auto parts that i found a 200 amp alt for 175 bucks. but it all depends on what youre planning on doing to your truck, weather it be extra lights or a winch, things like that. if youre just planning on keeping everything stock, i'd find the brand and amperage on summit that you want, then search specifically for that one.

This FSB thread had pictures(edit: before that ford fuel injection thing happened, still has the list) and lists vehicles that can use the same physical size alternator style. I did the 8.25" Powermaster route on my old 91, which had the 7" bracket. Actually I had it laying about from my old 87 5.0 Bronco and just had to get an 8.25" bracket from an 88 302 Lincoln MKIII at the local pick and pull. I used 0/1G wires for the power and ground since the alternator puts out 200 amps.

This photo gallery is for a 92 5.8 3G upgrade, but it appears to be pretty similar to what I had to do on my 87 5.0 Bronco.

This has links to how to's and a place to buy everything needed new or you can go to a j/y for the harnesses and what not.

the new style is easy... I got a 130amp for 99.00 new and it fit right in the same bracket... mine has 2 sets of holes as do the V8s...

you just need to know exactly what alternator you have... if you have the old style you're pretty much stuck unless you upgrade teh harness as those are prone to fire if you put a bigger alternator on... the newer style has no issue...

I suggest calling these guy''s: http://www.wayneelectric.com/

They're right on Anaheim St., the other side of the Long Beach Freeway. The owner's a friend of mine. We both belong to the the Long Beach Police Motor Patrol Assos.

Ask for "Steve". Tell him Mike Jablonski sent you. Tell him you have a 90' F150 & you want the 3G upgrade. They'll do it while you wait. He'll give you a "not worth getting your hand's dirty" price.

Dirty Dorthy's Cafe's right down the street if you want tho have lunch while you wait. (The guy who own's that place's name is Paul. Tell him I'm bringing his ex-wife back next week/ Boy, Long Beach is a small town)
