Front tire flew off!

Post Front tire flew off!

Wow what a morning. Was driving on the freeway when I lost the front tire at 65mph. I bought the truck in early December on Craigslist. Dude I bought it from had changed the tires on it so I believe the amount of torque used when changing was not the correct amount. Guess I should have checked that upon purchase(?) seeing as we ( the family & all other drivers on I270 this morn) are all very lucky to be here today . Lesson learned. Anyway, I have yet to assess the vehicle and confirm exactly the cause sooooo... I will let y'all know the results and may seek advice shortly.

Glad you're okay after the incident.
I don't know how much torque to use for the lug nuts. I just use my star wrench and tighten them as much as possible. Never had a wheel come off yet. I have heard of wheels coming off because the holes in the rims had ovaled and the lug nuts would not stay tight. That could cause the lugs to come off and thus the wheel.

you should REALLY use a torque wrench, overtorqued is just as bad as undertorqued!


for aluminum rims torque them to 120 Ft/Lbs, Steel wheels 110 Ft/Lbs. After 100 Miles, check again.

have always done it that way and never had any problems, EXCEPT for when the rear wheel fell off my '87, someone OVER tighten the lugnuts (No torque wrench), causing the original 1987 studs to snap, while i was going up the highway!

I probably "should", but 25 years of driving and changing flats, rotating tires, etc and never had 1 come off yet, so I am not likely to start now.

Put a new rotor on today and the fly away tire. All else was fine (brake pads, bearings). Plan on looking the other three tires over this weekend. Thanks for the comments!
