4.9 vs 5.0 questions. buying a new truck
#21
5.0 is fine if you are just grocery getting - you really cannot beat the 4.9 when it comes to ability to work and durability. My Dad put 370,000 on a 1980 F100 and never had the head off it. When the head gasket finally started to leak and he parked it in 2003, it used less than a quart of oil in 3000 miles.
My 4.9 did pretty well last August pulling the load below in 95+ heat from Texas to Pennsylvania. Total weight for everything behind the truck was 5800 lbs and I still averaged 12.5 mpg...and that was 65 mph in 5th most of the trip, dropped into fourth on some bigger climbs, and only had to drop into third once while climbing a mountain through a construction zone in eastern Tennessee.
Choice is always yours, and there are enough of them out there you could get one of each... Good luck.

Personally I like the 302 the sound of a V8 is always gonna be better then a 6 cylinder and also I think the 5.0 has plenty of power and spare parts are very easy to come by

Dodge+Ford = always ready
im a fan of the 302. my dad pulled a 33 foot mobile home with his 1975 f100 custom with the 302 4sp manual. it was squating to the axel but he still pulled it 30 miles with no problem engine wise.

" I like the sounds of a 302" that is lame everyone likes the sound of a built V8 lol
and 302 parts are cheap and plentiful because they are mass produced and dont last for long.
4.9 parts cost a little more. thats because the companies dont make their money off people cuz the 4.9l will out last the truck its self.
What exactly are you looking for in a truck? that is my question to you.
do you want performance, speed? oh and "awsome sound"?
or do you want and engine that will last forever. gets ok gas mileage for a truck. and can pull anything.
