Default 4.9 oil capacity

Just changed the oil in a 95 4.9 and put 6qts in it with a new filter also put in a stp oil treatment. Checked it and it appears to be at least a qt overfull. My dad had a 93 f150 with a 4.9 that he bought new and it always held 6 qts. What gives?

Welcome to the site

Sounds like you did not subtract oil for the STP used so it is over serviced

I didn't think that it would put it that over full. Maybe so. It was only like a pint.

5.5 im my 95 4.9l. If this is your first oil change, you should always start short and add to full. Usually 5qts and then top off after crank up. All of the STP products that I see are 15oz = almost 1/2 quart. I lost a motor due to stp, I'd stay away from it anyway. JMHO! Why are you using the STP?

My dad bought a 93 f150 4.9 new in 93. Ran only castrol oil in it and added a stp oil treatment at every oil change and the truck has 340k on it and doesn't smoke or burn any oil.

Got mine off of a Ford service tech who bought it new in 94, he ran the cheapest oil (whatever was on sale) with a motorcraft filter, 310k miles doesn't smoke or burn oil. It's not so much about anything you put into the motor as it is frequency of maintenance and how you drive it.

X3! I run Supertech 10w30 full synthetic in every truck (4 of them), my mowers and my generators. The trucks get an oil change every 8k Miles and the rest of the equipment gets changed depending on useage. All about the maintenance. The motor that I destroyed was my fault, but I still blame STP. I checked the oil one morning in my Buick Regal 3.8l and it was 1/2 qt low. Topped it off with stp, cranked it up and went inside to finish getting ready for work. 15 minutes later, I hear this awful noise from the carport. It was the spun bearings in my motor. The mechanic said that the STP had clogged up the oil passages with the cold temperature outside and starved the pump! If I were to ever use it again, it would be with a warm engine and running while I slowly add it. All of my trucks were purchased used. I buy the cheapest oil that I can by the case and do a flush. Change oil and filter, drive until it's up to temp and change the oil again. I drive that for a day or two and change to whatever oil I plan on running long term. Never had a smoker, clatter, or any oil related issues. I find that I get better gas mileage with the full synthetic as well. The only warning that I make is.....if you know that your engine is sludged up, forget synthetic or be prepared to change every gasket to fix the leaks that the synthetic cleaned the sludge out of. I just filled up my Sierra today for the first time since swapping to synthetic in it. No solid evidence yet, but I went from a best of 14.1 to 14.8mpg in town. The next few tanks will show if the GM Product benefitted like my Fords have.
