300 vs. 302?

My old man has an 88 f250 with the 300. Would choose that over my old 302 any day. His inline 6 has 390 thousand k on it. I think that explains it all

I always thought that while both are great motors, the 302 has more potential for performance upgrades while the 300 has more more potential for reliability and long service life. Not saying that the 302 isn't reliable, of course...just that the 300, being an "inline" design has a few less parts that could fail.
Mine has the 302, but when I was shopping around, I really was looking for the 300. Basically, the 4.9 has plenty of power for what I need. I don't get all giddy over loud v8's like I used to. And, I wasn't planning on doing any major performance upgrades to the motor.

It all depends on what you are going to be doing with the truck. I love my 300. It has a lot going for it, including amazing reliability. If you are going to be modding the engine a lot, the 300 isn't the best option. The 302 has so many more aftermarket performance parts. It all boils down to this: the 300 is a reliable engine that will never quit, but your 0-60 won't be too impressive. It will outlast and out-pull almost all engines. The 302 has more performance option and will be faster, it will also have more hp. The 302 can pull the same as the 300, but at a higher rpm. There's a reason why people call the 300 the "diesel of gassers." broncojunkie hit the nail on the head with his post.

I've had several 302s in cars and trucks and its a fine engine. Its easy to modify and it makes its most power above 4000 Rpm. I had two that were modded and were about 275-300 Hp. My 83 F 150 had a aftermarket 4 barrel and some minor ignition mods and it was great when the truck was empty but it didn't like hauling the 4500 lb TT. IMHO GT 40 heads, better cam, and a good exhaust setup would be the direction I would go.
My last 3 trucks have had the EFI 300 and its a great truck engine. Great low end torgue and its a very easy engine to work on. My latest one will haul my 4500 Lb TT easily which was a pleasent surprise. Unfortunately the head is the major restriction in this engine, power runs out by 3500 Rpm, and the after market is very limited. It can be modded but it can get expensive.
In its stock form its ideal for what I use it for and it still runs great at 245k miles. It does perform better with a 5 speed.

If your using it on the farm, go 300 for sure. The 300 has its power curve down low, it makes all its torque at low RPMS. The 302 makes its power up high, you have to rev them up to get the power.
As said earlier 300=not many mods, 302=many mods. If you are looking for dependability, simplicity, and power on the low end, take the 300.

300 vs 351 is basically the same as the 300 vs 302. The 351 is the same block as the 302 but bored and stroked to a 351. 351= Mods and poor mpg and 300=Reliability and decent mpg

Never had a Ford six, but the 4.0 inline six on my jeep was torquey as all get out. Only thing it lacked was the V8 sound...pulled like a tractor and sounded like one too. Pretty happy with the 302s I've had though. If you're gonna use your truck to pull heavy loads all the time, it's probably better to step up to a 3/4 ton diesel or big block gasser anyway.
