3.08 to 3.55 swap

3.08 to 3.55 swap
Im wondering if this regear is as simple as changing the ring/pinion and bearings? I would like to find it at a pull apart but Im not sure what too look for when identifying 3.55's, and possibly if theres other vehicles like explorers with 3.55's would fit, because 3.08's with 32's just isnt doing it

There is alot of set up when regearing and rear end.
1st is pinion depth.
This is accomplished by shims between the pinion shaft and the larger bearing.
Most of the time you are fine by just using the one that is one there from what ever vehicle you are taking it out of.
2nd is the crush sleeve to set the bearing preload
You will need a new one of those and it is better to buy 2 incase you mess the first one up(its easy to do) There are specs are a turning torque of the pinion which you measure with an old torque wrench with the needle that moves. I can probably supply you with the specs for that if you need too
3rd is setting the backlash. This is the most strenuous work of it all. This is how much play is between the pinion gear and the ring gear. If I am not mistaken the 8.8's require different thickness shims to move the carrier side to side to acquire the the correct backlash. I can probably supply you with those specs as well. Take the shims from the vehicle you take the gears out of. and keep the ones that are in your rear right now and mix and match. you might luck out or you might have to get new ones.
As far as getting one from and explorer or and expedition or something as along as it has the 8.8 rear end you will be fine. If the vehicle has 28 spline axles you either simply take out your spider gears( if it is an open diff)or swap ring gears from one carrier to the other and switch them out. It will be more complicated if you have a tlock unless you just switch out the ring gear itself on the carrier. as far as the axle codes to tell you which gears are behind what cover.

Oh and I forgot to mention
to measure pinion depth you need a pinion depth gauge and they are expensive
and to measure backlash you need a dial indicator which I imagine you could buy either a cheap on or an expensive one.

yes, axle swap is easier/cheaper. just look for a axle out of a a 150 that has 3.55 gears. if you didn't know you can look at door tags for the axle codes, dont need to crawl under the trucks (granted the owner of the truck could if switched axles and it may be different)

i can get a set of axles for my 250 for $350-400 out the door, so i imagine for a 150 you can probably cut that price in half, especially since iv been told people can get axles for as little as $50 each in some parts of the country.
