1996 f150 with a 1974 351w questions.
Hey guys first post on this forum and I had a few questions. Im trying to get some more information about a truck that im thinking of purchasing.
The truck is a 1996 f150 with a 1974 351w. Body of the truck has some pretty bad paint issues and has plenty of small dings dents. I plan on using the truck for light hauling of a max of 1k pounds, and very little to almost no towing. I do drive an average of 110 miles per day with some days reaching around 200 miles. Is there anything i should be looking at in particular with this engine or truck? (pretty new to trucks in general, currently drive a 2009 econoline van with 318k miles) Also i should mention that i do not know the mileage of the 150. (sorry about my format and if i did things wrong, not used to writing on a forum. If you need anymore information i can get it) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.f15...c7c90df784.jpg |
If you're going to be using this for your 200 mile, daily trip, I'm not so sure this would be the best option to do that in. Get an old Civic, or something of the likes and have this for playing/hauling?
I'm not much help beyond that thought. However, I did have at one point a hand-me-down '83 F150 with a '69 351W in it. Was awesome while it lasted (frame cracked multiple times). |
You obviously need to haul some weight or bulky items around for work. I'd think the mpg of the F150 vs current van might shock you.

Looks clean but a parts bin special.
What type of carb and how did he change the fuel system/pumps? NO A/C is not a big deal but no heat? Is the heater core leaking? That may need to be fixed. What's the emissions situation where you live? If it's from someone you know who does good work and just looks bitsed together it's probably ok but I'd wonder about the internals if I didn't know better such as the distributor gear and the cam shaft. Distributor gear needs to match the camshaft so hopefully he picked the correct one for the motor. If it's not been on the road for long it'll be fine till the gear starts to wear if it's mismatched. |
That thing looks pretty scary. I'd leave it. No A/C; no heat; wrong radiator; hacked & patched radiator hose; abandoned wiring sections; sketchy wiring mods... IDK what that transmission dipstick was supposed to be attached to, but it's not, so it's going to either break off at the base, or leak. The PS pump is among the worst ones Ford ever used, and that's saying a lot. The alternator is tiny, so it'll be undersized if you ever want to add a radio, phone charger, inverter, lights, or any other modern electronics. IDK how it's even running the e-fans. That DUI distributor will make it really easy to hotwire/steal. And no matter where you live, it's technically illegal to drive on any public road. So it'll be progressively more-difficult to register & insure it over the years.
