Fully disassemble & rebuild the transmission with 2WD parts.

But it would be quicker, cheaper, & easier to just find a 2WD transmission that fits the truck.

isnt it just the tail piece and a different output shaft?

would it be better to use a 4r70w or a E4OD?

The output shaft is different, which is the last part tome come out and first to go back in. As steve said, you would be better off finding a 2wd tranny.

And you can't just swap from a 4R70W to an E4OD or vice versa; you would have to change a whole bunch of other parts - driveshaft, crossmember, pcm, wiring harness.

Depends on your definition of "better". The E4OD can handle more torque; but it's heavier, less-efficient, longer, and requires several different external parts that you'd have to swap at the same time (including some wiring harness sections). So: a lot more work & money for no appreciable improvement in performance, durability, reliability, or cost-per-mile. Is that "better"?
