Default Instrument Cluster Questions

I just wanted to clarify something with an instrument cluster swap. I want to get an instrument cluster with tach for my 1989 F150. As far as I understand it, any 87-91 cluster would work. Here are some questions I have.

If I buy one for a manual transmission (mine is an automatic), can I just remove the backing plate for the gear selector?

If I buy one with a cracked plastic lens, the lens I have right now is perfect. Can I just swap that over?

Now another question, but this has a story. When looking at instrument clusters on Ebay, I found a perfect one from a "Instrument Cluster Warehouse". The seller wanted the buyer to give him the make and model as a prerequisite of the sale, so I did and asked if it would work for mine. (It was off of an 89, with manual tranny). He stated that I need to get the part # off of mine, because I need to "program" it. I would need to get the dealer to program the new cluster for me. This sounded very strange as I've never heard of this before.

So last question is, do I need to program anything with the new cluster, other than changing the odometer if I want to?

89 is not a programmable speedo (92 to 96 are).
As far as I can see 87 to 91 are the same for fitment.
You can remove the gear indicator and swap in your blank.
The clear plastic should swap over.
Your old speedo won't fit the tach cluster without some trimming (but it can be done).

Thanks that's what I thought. I'm on the hunt now for a cluster!
