1993 F150 Auto- No go have to shift manual

My 93 f150 started acting up with the check engine light coming on. Its a six cylinder 300 automatic. At this time I have to shift manual from low to D2 to Drive to get it going. There have been times when the engine light goes out and it works good. I used the code reader but it doesn't throw any codes. Has anyone experienced this problem? My next visit will be to auto zone to see if they get the codes for me.

AutoZone can only check OBD-II vehicles for codes, yours is OBD-I and does not have the connector under the dash like the OBD-II's. There is a thread here, somewhere, that describes how to get codes from your OBD-I truck, just run a search for it and follow the directions.

Good luck.

Sounds like your valve body which builds up the pressure in the tranny to shift went out. from the confusing sentence im saying your Valve Body went out in the tranny lol

Does your tranny have a vacuum modulator?

I forgot to plug the vacuum line into mine one time and had the worst time trying to figure out why it wouldn't shift out of first.

Thanks dewman for the reply I went to AutoZone and your right they can only check for codes on 96 models and up. A friend of mine has a ford code reader OBD-I so we will be check tomorrow for codes.
I will check the valve body tomorrow V8F1501996 . I'll look it up on the net.
RocketScott I will also check for brken or loose vacuum line.
Thanks all for your replies, Still working on oldblue
