Question 1992 Manual Trans - Won't start, rapid clicks

Hi,

My truck wouldn't start today so I jump started it and it ran fine. I let it run for about 15 minutes then shut it off. Just to be sure it was going to start the next time I need it I turned the key to try to start it and it wouldn't start. It was as if it had never charged. I turn the key and i hear it try to start just a little bit initially, then rapid click click click with no strain of the engine trying to start.

Any thoughts what it could be ? Starter? Alternator?

How about battery? If a jump starts it, it doesn't appear to be the starter. Alternator a possibility. Have local parts store run a check on at least the battery.

I would charge the battery with a battery charger, preferably no faster than ten amps, and also clean the battery post connections inside and out. also possibly clean the ground connection.

It is not good for an alternator to charge a dead or very low battery, and some alternators won't charge a battery in a low state.

You may well have a bad battery or you may not, but I would start there.

Hi,
The clicking is the selinoid trying to engage but not enough power from battery to do so!

IF battery is weak or won't carry the load, could be bad battery, test battery.

If battery good could be alternator not charging, test replace.

If battery good and alternator good test selinoid?

As was stated, dirty/corroded battery connectors, bad grounds could also cause this and does everyday....somewhere!

If you want to troubleshoot these things, I would at least get a Haynes Manual and a VOM Meter to get started!

Check the battery cables and ground connections too. One of the cables on my 94 was corroded inside the insulation causing a large voltage drop. I changed out all of the big cables and cleaned the ground connections.
