1992 f150 5sp problems.

Ok its a 1992 f150 with a 5.0 and a 5 speed manual. I dont know what kind of transmission it is off the top of my head but i should have it by tomorrow. Ok here is the the problem, i went to go shift into second and got nothing but i was able to get it into 3rd though, after coming to a stop and trying to put it in first i got nothing in first and then tried second again and still nothing. I ended up having to start out in 3rd. So here i sit dead in the water with only 3rd and reverse only ones working. speaking with my dad he thinks it may have been a shaft bearing, meaning gonna have to get a new trans. Thanks guys.

Sounds like a shift fork is worn, mine did the same, changed it out. Problem solved. And your trans will most likely be a M5OD

Yea went into netural just fine. Also i forgot to mention that in the last week i have been hear a noise best way to describe it is like a roller coaster climbing a hill, talk to one of the techs at working and he thought maybe it was pilot bearing? Noise would go away when ever the clucth was pushed in. Also here is a pic of the trans if it helps what kind it is.

It's a Mazda 5spd same as mine and is it almost a sand between to panes of glass noise? Mine makes that noise all the time it's just the gears spinning against the bearing. When I meant come out of neutral gate I meant does once it's in neutral then you push into first and won't let you push it in?

No it didnt sound like that, it was more of a tapping/knocking noise.

Be sure to make sure the fluid level is correct for the tranny. M5R2's are notorious for spitting out (all the) oil from the 3 rear shifter rail plugs (which would then have to be replaced or resealed).

Also the shifter kit components are very fragile and go away after time. This opens up a lot of clearance in the shifter and make finding gears really vague. Pull out the shifter ball from the top of the tranny and inspect. A new shifter repair kit can be had from All State Gear for $14.80 plus shipping. A real easy installation. See my previous post today. All the above can be serviced with the tranny in place.

If the tapping noise goes away when you first touch the clutch pedal (in about an inch or so), the problem is most likely a noisy throw-out bearing. Bummer, as tranny needs to be pulled. At this time check clutch and replace the clutch slave.

Mine did that took off top plate used some red hi-temp rtv silicone sealant and no more leak. Also temporarily replace a plug with a dime and rtv untill the plugs I ordered come in.
