Is it automatic or manual trans? I'm assuming it's an automatic. If so it could be a vacuum problem. Is the hitting like a jerk, or the transmission shifting back and forth between gears? I know there are sensors that effect shifting, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is the ABS sensor on the rear end which also effects the transmission.
