1988 F150 starter staying engaged
I am having problems with my f150 5.0 pickup. When I start my truck the starter stays engaged even after it is running. I have replaced several starters, solinoids, ignition switch, and nutural safety switches and still am having this problem do you have any suggestions?

Purchase a 2 AWG Positive Battery Cable
Purchase a 2.0 AWG (2 Gauge) Positive Battery Cable
along with another new Solenoid and install them both on your truck.
Do not just buy a new (stock size) 4 AWG positive battery cable that came on your truck, for unknown reasons; it is too small diameter cable now.
The Starter is probably going out, but installing the larger 2 gauge cable,
will buy you some time.
I installed 5 Solenoids, two the same day before I installed a 2 gauge positive battery cable.
Member JCMS replaced 7 solenoids before he installed a larger diameter positive battery cable.
There have been several Threads in this F-150 forum concerning the Starter staying engaged while the engine was idling.

88 f150 starting problem
i have that same truck. 88' f150 with the 5.0 302 V8 fuel injected.
i can start my truck with the old broken solenoid switch by just completely by passing it with a screw driver. i have put 3 different new ones in but when ever i do it keeps my starter engaged whether i have the truck on or off. i have replaced both the positive wire and the ground wire with the new 2 gauge wires.
what else could be the problem?

If the positive and negative battery cables were replaced with 2 gauge wires, did you upgrade the engine ground from the intake manifold to the bulkhead (firewall)? After all, the starter is grounded to the engine block and the engine block is grounded to the chassis via engine ground cable and would be a pointless upgrade as far as the engine and starter is concerned.

If your ignition switch is not stuck in the "Start" position then you have high resistance somewhere that is causing your solenoid to weld the contacts in the "closed" position. Clean all of your connections. Every one, battery to Starter and don't forget your grounds.
