Default 1988 F150 4.9l starter NOT disengage

Starter runs on even when key is off. Changed solenoid, starter, added ground wire to starter/frame, changed positive and negative wires. Disconnected starter wire from solenoid. Have to disconnect battery to keep it from running.

New starter? Sounds like you got one for a manual instead of an automatic or vice versa.

Check the fender mounted starter relay. The relay is what connects the battery power to the starter when you turn the key. Many after market relays are not as good as OEM and some fail right out of the box.
