Diagnosing No-Start
Year: 2001
Vehicle: E-350
Engine: 5.4
Miles: 134,000
Previous services:
Oil Every 4,000 miles
Plugs @ 100,000 Miles
Injectors cleaned (at injector shop) at 100,000 miles
Air filter at 100,000 miles
Transmission fluid at 40,000; 75,000, 100,000 miles
Overall it has been a highly reliable Van!
Yesterday I was forced to drive it to the grocery store (Diesel Vw was blocked in) When I came out it wouldn't start (not even try). Towed it home.
Today My truck is not "running"; but IS starting and Idling for a few seconds. Occasionally it will run + Rev up with load but the vast majority of the time it dies if you apply any load at all(a/c, in gear, depress the accelerator).
So far I have replaced the Fuel filter; and installed a fuel pressure gauge.
Fuel pressure with engine off (no Vac) is ~40 psi, idling it is around 33psi. I pressurized the vacuum port on the FPR and I was able to get fuel pressure up to 90psi. I also tried forcing the Fuel pressure to 42 psi then starting nothing changed with 42 psi.
Based on above I have pretty much ruled out fuel delivery.
Current thoughts are
1) Crank position sensor (no real basis, except suspicion)
2) Bad/ poor injection pulse (need to test with noid light.)
ANY AND ALL Ideas are Highly appreciated!

I haven't been back home yet to work on it; but I did check out AutoZone's website and it looks like The 5.4 uses a Cam Position sensor (not crank). $29.95 in DuraTrash.
I'm considering picking one up and swapping it out if nobody has more ideas . ..
Has anybody on here swapped one out before . . . .
BTW; I forgot to mention in my first post that my SGII shows "No Codes Stored" and I have never cleared any on this van.

Just found out that the 5.4 has both Cam position sensor+ Crank position sensor.
***Hot Linked from AutoZone****; so I don't know how long it will last.
Does that give any insight to anyone?

Reviving this thread. My situation is similar. 2001 Excursion 5.4. My winter beater. Cranks over good, no start. Throw some ether in there and it fires for a bit. I will check the intake air hose tomorrow but need to know where/what to look for. What are the possibilities the fuel pump is bad, or the crank or cam sensors. My apologies for the silly questions but i'm a Dodge Hemi car guy and not overly familiar with these Fords. Thanks in advance.
