    Depends on what you're looking for, the 4.9 has more torque but the 4.2 has more hp. The 4.9 is a proven engine but I don't have any complaints about the 4.2 and I don't hear anyone else complaining about it and mine has 150,000 on it and still running strong. I would say if you're looking to buy go test drive some trucks with these engines, personally I like the styling of the older trucks with the 4.9 engines better but it may be hard to find one in good enough shape to make it worth buying.
