History
1999 Ford F-150 4.6L V8, extended cab, short bed. Bought this truck about 1-1/2 -2 years ago. Only had about 98K on it, so I figured it was a great deal for the price... 3 G's... Have had problem after problem with it, but she's treated me well. Going to have to replace the rear end in it soon, she's noisy, but she's wore down the burrs for the time being! Always wanting to learn more about my gem. She's wicked rusty underneath... But that's okay cause it has good curb appeal! If anyone has any suggestions on cheap restoration and other such things, it's definitely appreciated. People with this same truck would be great to share info with. Mine has a lot of problems, some fixed, some not... So we can help each other!
Problems and Issues:
*Two broken bed mounts, both close to the cab. So rusted out that replacement is not an option. Any fabricators out there, before I tear the entire bed off!?
*Rear end is crapping out. I believe it's just the pinion, but not 100% certain. Took of magnet and tons of metal shards, took off the cover, cleaned it out, replaced the grease. Still noisy, but seems okay for now...
*Might have a sticky caliper. Not sure if that's what warped my rotor or not. ;-)
*Shifter indicator on dash has seemed to slip... I know I'm in OD, but why does the indicator say I'm in 2nd gear? Any suggestions on a fix?
*Jerry-rigged a battery because I'm poor... Didn't have top posts, so I rigged side posts on it... Works great, but I would like to have my bungee cord back for other uses. Donations welcome!
*Might have a suspension problem... More updates on this when it breaks...
*Stepsides are rotting out like the rest of the truck... When that puppy snaps off, any suggestions on reattachment? Besides fabrication...?
*4WD sticks... Lubed the stick once, might have to again because she sticks in 2WD on occasion.
*Replaced the two exhaust manifolds, but not the rusted out EGR valve and assembly... Just fabricated a bolt and shoved it on there... Should I fear emissions repercussions and buy a new one, or is this fix going to hold?
*What else could go wrong with this thing...
----------
Exterior
None, I'm poor.
-----
Interior
Replaced factory stereo with a 52Wx4 channel CD player... Made the speakers louder and less papery-sounding.
But that's it, cause I'm poor.
-----
Under the Hood
Standard everything. Why, exactly, did they do such a mangled job on the spark plug locations??
-----
Suspension
Standard, but I lost a tie rod end 2 miles from home. So I tied it up with a rope and limped it back... Talk about a fun ride!
-----
Wheel and Tires
Only about 3/16ths tread left... And it's winter. I feel like I'm in Santa's Sleigh!
