1992 F150 Long Bed Transmission Replacement
1992 F150 Long bed (originally a manual) needs a new automatic transmission. It had been converted to automatic by a previous owner but now needs replacing again.
Looking for advice on Make/Model/Transmission type to pull from junk yard in order to get it back on the road.
I'm not the sharpest tack - have already pulled an E4OD and mounted it only to find that my drive shaft is now about 3 inches too long. Also dropped the tranny I had for the core charge so I can't check it to see if it was C4/C6/AOD. Dash indicator has only P-R-N-D-2-1 - am assuming it was a C6 from what I can remember of the one that was in it.
I'm not much of a grease monkey but thanks to Chilton's/Haynes manuals I can at least become a trained monkey. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You may need a stand alone computer to run an E4OD, or at least a different PCM.
Driveshafts can be shotened, but then again, you can just get a D/S from a same length truck that had an E4OD and you're good to go.
E4OD is a C6 with an extra overdrive gear. The overdrive will save you a lot of money on fuel compared to a C6 - a lot - which makes it worth the expense of replacing the C6.

E4OD Swap - is complicated.

Your previous trans would of been a C6 not likely an AOD or C4.
Its more than just getting the correct PCM to match your E4OD.
The E4OD PCM:
- needs a speed reference from a Vehicle Speed Sensor.
(Could be in top of your differential or not used on your truck)
- needs a throttle position reference from a Throttle Position Sensor.
- needs an Engine RPM reference to the PCM
Its a major deal to swap a E4OD in to a C-6 truck even for an experienced mechanic.

Thanks for the reply to everyone.
I am going to drag a C6 out of another truck at Pull-a-Part and try again from there.
I have several different measurements in hand to take with me so hopefully I will make a better choice this time around.
