What is the difference between the 2G and 3G alternator?
I have an 88 f-150 with a 302 and i want to install a high output 1 wire alternator. i know the 2g has different electrical connections and the 2G i
fan is external and the 3G is internal ect but the electrical does not matter because of the one wire set up so my question is about the differance in size as i can not find the info on case size. Thank You for your help in advance.

2G- 2nd generation, 3G- 3rd generation and I think now Ford is up to 6th. Below is a basic description from RJM, they sell 3G kits. Bottom line is 2G is a fire hazard and couldnt carry the load, 3G is a vast improvement and with varying amperage ratings available, you can customize your power needs with an alternator that will handle it.
My engine is a 4.9 and I used the existing bracket. It already had the holes for the 12 & 6 o'clock mounting.
Here's my 3G install thread:

In 1996 Ford publicly recognized the fire hazard caused by the 2G alternator and released TSB 96214. This alternator design caused increased resistance and heat which could damage the wire harness and alternator. A small percentage of vehicles actually caught on fire!
Fords 3G alternator was a giant leap in technology and quality. The 3G was internally regulated, used two internal cooling fans, sealed bearings, and had a superior battery stud. The 3G’s were more efficient, and produced more amperage at idle than any of its predecessors.

The engine as i understand it is out of a newer truck 90 something sorry i forgot to mention that earlier so let see if i have this strait my alt mounts in a bracket shared with the smog pump and the clock position on my bracket is 12 and 6 like in your build so i need to measure the spacing of the holes and if its 8.5 inches im good for a 3g if its 7 inches i need to find the right bracket?
