Default Thermostat repair

Hey everyone.
I own a 1990 f150 that is a project truck. The thermostat always reads either cold, or slightly above cold, at most 1/4. Never makes it to the middle. Right now it doesn't seem the effect anything, but I want to repair before it does. Is there a way to trouble shoot the exact area I should check first? I figured since it was slightly reading something that may help pinpoint a location. Thanks in advance.

The gauge is basically an idiot light. Wherever it sits normally is where it sits. If it changes from normal - like over to hot - there's a problem. If it does what it always does, all is well.
If you want the gauge to read differently, try a different temp sender. NOT a sensor - a sender. They're 2 different things.

Which thermostat is installed? They come in different temperatures. Verify you have the correct one before mucking with the gauges. The gauge may just be indicating what it is being told.
