Default tachometer erratic and engine dies when warming up

1990 F150 4x4 xlt lariat with the 4.9l and a 5speed
Truck was stationary for a few months while I did my suspension work. After driving it around a little its developed a problem. My rpm gauge is being erratic and isn't reflecting the speed of the motor. the guage is moving but the engine speed is constant and fine. once the motor warms up a little it'll sputter and then die. fuel pressure is good. i can restart the truck right away and it starts fine then sputters and dies. if i let it cool down it'll take longer to warm up, then do the same thing. i'm thinking something electrical. i got codes 67 and 32, but i'm pretty sure those were there before this problem. I had to replace the TFI ignition module two years ago due to a no start problem. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Just an update - When this first started happening I remember hearing a weird noise coming from under the dash. Also now the truck won't start at all.

edit - it wont start up directly after dying i have to let it cool down first now

Both of those (32(R) EVP – EGR not responding properly during test – EVP (O,R,M)EVR – EVP signal is/was low – EVR (R,M)
PFE – PFE shows low pressure, EGR not seating or memory, not seating intermittently – PFE
67
Park/Neutral circuit fault – PNP, Transmission Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor circuit – Transmission) will cause it to die or not start. What you should do is start the test again and pull the jumper wire when the CEL starts blinking, this will clear codes. Then run it for a little bit to see what comes back. Work on whatever comes back.

Usually not running when warm is either PIP sensor in distributor or Ignition Coil, FWIW.

As for the tach, it could be the gauge on the cluster failing, not unheard of, pull the cluster and clean the connectors, also check the the connection at the coil tan/yellow wire.

Well now the truck won't start at all even if it is cold. Something must have been slowly dying. Back when I was looking at codes I couldn't figure out how to fix 32. I thought 67 showed up just because I didn't have the clutch depressed when I ran the test. Let me check-- sure enough i re-ran the test with my foot on the clutch and now i just have code 32. I cleared all codes, tried to start (will not start now) and rechecked for codes - i get 11 10 11 so all good. Could it be the ignition module went bad again? or maybe the PIP in the dist?

No spark. It's acting now like it did when the ignition module went out a few yrs ago... I'll pick one up tomorrow and see if that fixes it. Will report!

New ignition control module fixed both the tach and the no start problem. Weird how it was screwing with the tach! Thanks

It's because the tach is run through the coil, which is controlled by the ICM.
