Default Starter Mounting Shims for 87 F150

A couple of weeks ago I put a new starter on my 1987 F150 and now it just grinds when I try to start it. I checked and the starter had worked itself loose so I tightened the 2 bolts as tight as I could and it started up. The next day it I went out to start it and it started grinding again...it was dark so I couldn't check to see if my starting it a couple of times the previous day had caused it to get loose again but I will check when I get home. Should there be shims or washers on the starter bolts between the starter and where it is mounted? Could this be my issue?

Did you ever figure out what the problem was with the starter?

Fords don't use starter shims. But the starter for manual transmissions is different from that for autos. Make sure you install the correct one, as specified in this caption:
