Default Rpm Gauge coming on an off causing motor to chug while driving

Hi, I just purchased a 91 Ford F150 with the 5.0L V8. I just filled it it fuel and began driving when the rpm gauge suddenly dropped to nothing and the motor began to rev high and low without any change of my foot position. I let the truck sit and then it came back on as if nothing happened. Now its stuck off and motor is chugging up hills. Will idle fine. Motor has over 273,000 km on it. Any suggestions? Just replaced the battery and is charging properly. Thanks, Jules

I guess the first thing I would suspect is a loose connection. I would look at the coil where the small wires connect to begin with.

Where would I find the coil?

Follow the large wire coming out of the center of the distributor cap, the other end of it plugs into the coil. The small wires hooking onto the coil in the connector is what I would check.
