I like the letter that the first link provides you to give the mechanic.

Do you have a battery charger? If not, when you take your alternator in to get tested you should have them charge the battery, a lot of auto parts places that Ive seen will quick charge batteries for free.

That sounds like a plan this afternoon. I don't have a charger.

Cruddy. You can always call ahead to ask if they'll charge it for you. Don't want to lug that block around if they won't even do it.

Nice post, you seem to be the board instigator/douchebag from the posts I keep seeing.

I know about those links. In 20 years of working on vehicles I've never had any of those problems from doing this. Driving ving the car like that was one instance. 99.9% of the time its disconnected for a few seconds to see if anything majors changes, then its hooked back up. But yeah, if you pull it off and leave it off for a good while the chances go way up that something might happen. But for just a few.seconds the odds are extremely low.

Hes hardly a douchebag or instigator. He speaks his mind and points out when, to him, something is wrong. Bottom line, your not supposed to do it. Is it quick and easy, sure. Is it right, no. My personal opinion is that a "mechanic" that tests systems with that kind of disregard is too lazy to work on any of my vehicles. Instilling that level of irresponsibility into a DIYer is just stupid. Ive only been working on vehicles for about 7 years and I would never take that chance with any vehicle.

They stopped testing alternators like that 25 years ago, when everything went fuel injected. It's the old dogs that won't learn new tricks that keep doing it that way, and keep telling people to do it that way. A simple voltmeter will test it correctly.

Since I signed up here I keep running across post after post of his that are condescending, insulting, and serve no purpose except to give someone some ****. I'm all for speaking ones mind, but come on, no need to be an *** when someone hasn't asked for. However, if they have asked for it then go to town.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Im not a lazy tech and would never screw a customer. If I caused a problem I would fix it, and take the time to fix it completely. I've told customers that if they have even the slightest uneasiness about anything to please let me know so I can put them at ease and make 100% sure they leave happy. I pride myself on that because there are too damn many shady morons out there that give us a bad name just to make an extra buck. I see it constantly and it infuriates me to no end.

Enough of my rant. Man today has been a **** day.

I help, and I have fun. I wouldn't say anything here I wouldn't say to your face. If you think something I say sounds f*cked up it probably wouldn't sound as bad in person because of my tone, but you can't hear my tone. Sometimes I'm joking, I like to let those fly without smileys. Either way, there are things that must be said whether people like them or not.
