Key won't go into ignition
I have a 1989 F-150. The key will only go part way into the ignition and will not turn. The wheel is also locked.
The key just won't go in.
I am at a loss here. The next step is to have it towed to the shop.
Does anyone have any ideas?
- I have put the truck in natural. I have pushed in the clutch. (manual trans.)
- I had try turning the wheel in both directions.
- I have tried pushing hard on the key.
- I had hit the lock and the key with a end of a screwdriver in case and pin was stuck on the lock.
- I have tried then 2nd ignition key in case the first was worn.
- I have adjusted the tilt on the steering column.
The key just won't go in.

Graphite and oil were no help. I tried both.
I should also mention that the day before it worked just fine.
I drove the truck home from work, they key just didn't go in the next morning.

As a last resort before taking it to a shop it is very easy to replace the ignition cylinder on these trucks.

Search youtube videos on how to replace the whole ignition cylinder. From what i've seen, its pretty easy to do. I believe you can buy a new ignition cylinder with two keys for something like $15. A lot cheaper than a tow bill and paying someone to do it.

You have to be able to put the key in and turn it to on to pull the lock cylinder, I believe.
Maybe a pin (tumbler) jammed up but more likely (do you have kids ?) there is something jammed in there.
Worst comes to worst, you may have to buy a new lock tumbler and then hammer your key in so you can turn it on and remove it. Or find another column.
