Default Tire load rating ?

I bought what I thought were stock tires for my 96 f150 last year. Went to a different shop to get one repaired and they tell me the tires the first shop put on aren't rated for the truck.
They're the right size, 235 75r 15's but their load rating is only 105.
This shop told me I should be running 109. Is this correct?

I believe you're talking about the speed rating? Normally a load rating on a tire is in the form of 1000+ pounds each, with most tires sold in that size and bigger being something like max load each tire will support is somewhere around 1700+ pounds.

Nope, load and speed rating are two different numbers.

A quick google search has learned me something today! As a mechanic, I should really know that. I just know the Load Range C and higher.

Anywho! This google search brought me to a table, and a 105 load rating, equates to 2,039 pounds. A 109 rating equated to 2,271 pounds.

If you use the truck as a heavy duty work truck and push it's limits, I'd replace them. If you just use it lightly, don't worry

The tire size for your truck comes with 3 possible load capacities (load index). The two most common are Standard Load (SL), and Extra Load (XL). Standard load tires are most of the stocked tires at your local shops. Their maximum load is usually 105. Extra load tires usually max out at 108 or 109. There's an extra ply in the sidewall for additional support under load. The third tire is an LT tire. All of your high floatations tires are LT. They're primarily for more heavy duty applications (250's, etc.). If your truck's door placard says 41PSI, you should be running an XL or LT.

Thanks for the info guys. My 96 calls for an XL tire, so I went with a load rating of 108.
