I came to the same conclusion after spending a lot of time filling holes along the top seam. Before I even start down the sides I am adding a piece behind the seam, along with switching to .025 wire. Between the two it should make a big difference.
When I do the other side I'm not messing around with trying to do a butt weld, I'll just lap it. I had planned on lapping the new piece over the old, but your way of placing the new panel behind the old makes more sense, so thanks for mentioning that.
