Trans swap ideas?
Have a slightly mod 302, that will mainly be used for towing.has 3.55 gears, 2wd. having a hell of a time trying to get an AOD working properly. curious on what every ones thoughts would be on maybe a swap to a c6 or c4...or maybe even a manual trans(not sure where to start there tho). would tow about 6k on the weekends, and daily drivers during the week.

Maybe to many trucks?
C6 or ZF5 are the only transmission I would personally run.
I personally have a C6 302 (soon to be finished with a cam upgrade) and I love my C6.
Only thing I don't like about the C6 is no OD. If you can live with the gas mileage of the C6 then you should be fine.
Only thing I don't like about the ZF5 is it isn't really a go fast transmission but it doesn't sound like you want that anyways.

I've been researching the 5-speeds for two different projects. I understand there are different models: for diesel engines and for gasoline engines.
I have a Perkins diesel engine that was in a late '70s Ford F100 4x4. The guy gave me the engine complete with bell housing for connecting it to a big block transmission. I'm assuming one out of a gas-burner. I'd like to get a ZF5 to hook up to the Perkins. Any suggestions for what to look for?
I'm thinking I'd have trouble going back to anything withOUT overdrive.
As for the AOD, I have one in a parts truck ('92 F-150 with 4.9). Can they not be built up enough for heavier duty service? I have an E-350 with a 6.9 diesel and a C-6. Would love overdrive for that one, too! Options?

The ZF5 has a integrated bell housing so not sure how you are going to put a bell housing on the ZF5.
Yes the AODs can be built up to be heavier duty.
Only way to get overdrive in a C6 is a gear vendors expensive but works.

I am pretty sure the mazdas do detach but not sure. The one I sold from a ranger was detachable.
Not sure how to hook it up to a perkins.
However the mazdas will probably blow up behind a perkins hence why they didn't put them behind 351s.

if your looking for a manual, the np-435 is a bulletproof machine. my truck came with a towing package and that 4 speed it works great for towing but its not very good on gas. They use to use them in bread trucks and heavy machines like that, and they are tough, I had a friend that built a 500hp 351w and used the np-435 and that transmission has held up for 4 years of hard abuse and is still in use today. He has another truck with a 302 and it has the same transmission and he hauls big boats with it.
