Ticking noise on cold start
I installed a Melling oil pump in my 1996 5.0 liter F150. Now I have a ticking noise from the driver side of the engine. It only lasts for a few seconds and only occurs on a cold start up. After I get to work, and start it at lunch, it doesn't make that sound. Is this something I should worry about?

Start with changing your oil filter.
The better filter brands good silicone anti-drain back valves. When the filter is getting old this valve quits working. I use Fram Tough Guard (TG8A) Works okay.

I used the Motorcraft FL1A for years and that is when I was having this issue. I started using the low end Fram filter and it was not all that better. I then called Fram and they said that I should use the Tough Gard Filter. I have been using the TG8A for three years and so far so good. (300 6cy)

I tried an oil change with a Mobil 1 filter. Same thing. Still the ticking. I am concerned it is a faulty oil pump. It starts, the ticking goes on for no more than 15 seconds then quiets. Is it possible the oil pump is not priming itself quickly enough?
