Default Shorty headers

I am considering putting shorty headers on my 96 with 5.0. I am going to leave the stock Y pipe and cats in place since CT requires them for emissions, and leave the Thrush tube I installed in place of the stock muffler. Will I notice any difference in sound/performance?

These are the headers I am considering:

If I go ahead and do it I'll strip the paint off and repaint with VHT black paint.

Here's what it sounds like now:

From what I have read shorty headers don't give much power gains but do give better sound. The Y pipe is the limiter on these trucks. There are aftermarket options, or you can have an exhaust shop fab one up for you. Be prepared to spend $300 or so.

Thanks, I really just am looking for a little better sound over stock while still being able to pass emissions. Doing them will be a project for next year though, still gotta do the core support, which is happening in the fall, in the spring is leveling it and tires, then exhaust will be next summer.

Just ordered the kit from Summit Racing. Will get a good set of gaskets as the gaskets that come with the kit look kinda crappy. Gonna paint them flat black with some VHT flameproof paint before I have the local garage install them for me.

I am curious which set you ordered. Let us know how the install goes!

I ordered these: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g9035

I also got a Fel Pro exhaust manifold gasket set from Advance:http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/f...anifold+gasket

Also got some black VHT Flame Proof paint from Advance which they had to order, I had them order me 3 cans.

As far as installation, I'm going to have the local garage toss em on for me as I don't want to mess around with broken bolts and such.

Changed my mind on the exhaust for my truck. Going to still replace the manifolds with the shorty headers. I am however now going to do either a Flowmaster or Gibson dual cat back system. What are some of you guys running?

Good luck with those. The dome end that the y pipe connects to and seals against will bend easily as you tighten the pipe down. I have a set sitting in my garage that I could never get to completely seal.
