I don't know about your rear end. I believe a 96 still had a mechanical speedometer cable that runs of a gear in the tailhousing of the trans.
One way to diagnose the problem would be to take out the instrument cluster, raise the rear ot eh truck, start it and put it in drive to see if the cable turns. If it does, problem is in the head unit. If not, its the cable or one of the gears in the tranny.

I I ggogled 96 f150 diff pictures and found a page that had a diagram of the diff broken down. It shows a antilock brake senser on the left side of the houosinf near the vent tube.

What you're looking at through the hole is the tone ring. It has little teeth all the way around it. The sensor (VSS) measures the teeth and the spaces in between to provide a signal.
Your tone ring appears to be gummed up solid and if there are iron filings in that mess (there always are) it can't read the spaces, so as far as it can tell the truck isn't moving.
Start with pulling your diff cover and cleaning that mess up and putting in some fresh fluid
The tone ring is the lower piece with little teeth
