Default No 4x4 Low: Related to Tranny?

Finally got a day of nice steady rain and some time off. I was heading out the pasture for a little mudding and decided to activate 4 wheel drive. 4 Hi came on just fine but when I pressed the button for Low, nothing. I put it in park, neutral, drive...everything and the Low would never come on. I turned around and went home because I was afraid something might be wrong with the whole system.

The week before, I noticed that my truck wouldn't crank. No lights or anything came on. Before I checked for a dead battery, I decided to take it out of park and slam in back in...that worked. Then a few days later, I noticed that it wasn't shifting in D. I stopped, ran through the gears and set it back in D...started shifting again. I parked the truck, put it in Drive, and it did the same thing.

Are these two separate problems or could they be related? Do I need to rebuild my shift column?

More info on the truck would help but if it's an E4OD it sounds like you may have a MLPS issue. Especially the part about not starting until you pushed it into park hard.

Indeed, it's a 96 f150 with an E4OD.

Well the 96 and up had the updated connector but that doesn't mean the actual sensor isn't bad. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

For those who might search for this having the same problem...the answer was the MLPS sensor. Changed out the sensor and it runs butter smooth and 4x4 low works wonderfully. It's like a brand new transmission!
