Default Going in to drive or reverse

Hey guys I got a 1988 Ford F-150 4x4 Laramie edition (automatic transmission) and I just got it started and running now. I tried to take it for a test drive and I when I put it in drive all it did was rev up the motor. I tried to put it in reverse and it did the same. I tried it with all the other gears and it did the same. I needed to get it back in my driveway so I put in reverse felt it go in to gear, gave it has and it revved up and then eventually caught and backed in to the driveway. I crawled underneath and I saw that there is fluid on both u-joints. What do you guys think?

If there is no fluid in the rear end would it cause the truck to do that?

What did you have to do to the truck to get it running? Have you checked the transmission fluid level to verify it's full? Sounds like you are either low on trans fluid. there are some other possibilities such as bad tailshaft seal leaking the fluid out. Might want to start with the simple stuff first. Just verify the fluid level and that the trans is not pumping fluid out of the tailshaft.

Your trans uses hydraulic pressure for actuating the gears. Your rear end is a direct drive component. It will turn without fluid. It's not a good idea, but it will turn.

I had to replace the starter and the battery to get it running. I checked the transmission fluid too and it is good

Have you dropped the transmission pan? The filter may have come loose. It's not likely, but a possibility.

did you let the truck warm up before you put it in gear? If it's been sitting for a while it may have air pockets that are not allowing the fluid to fully pressurize the passages.

That's what I thought. I just wanted to double check on that.

I have not drop the transmission pan. I did not let the truck warm-up for a little while I will try that. The truck is been sitting for about six months without running.

Did you check the transmission fluid level with the engine running?
