Default Front differential interchange

I need to replace the front differential (pumpkin) in my 87 F150 4x4. A local wrecking yard has a 94 F150 with the parts I need, but I want to make 100% sure they are the same before I drop the cash. What years will interchange with my 87? Did they put different gear ratios in the front diffs, or are they all the same? Are there numbers I can check on the unit, or do I have to pull the pumpkin and count teeth to determine the ratio?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

From what I've read the front ratio will be the same as the rear so if you can get the rear axle code from the door jam and find out the rear ratio the front SHOULD be the same.

My rear axle ratio is 3.55 (Code 19). There is a tag on the front diff that has a 3.54 on it, so I am assuming that's the ratio.

So, assuming the ratio is correct, will a 94 differential fit my 87?
