There is also damage to pinion gear. The damage to differential case is mirrored on opposite side.
Purchased this truck and have just begun working on it. I knew there was something wrong with the rear end as the pinion shaft was obviously sloppy.
1. What could have caused the pinion shaft to contact the differential case in this manner? I have not taken it apart yet but I am guessing a bad bearing.
2. Is this differential case junk now?
Option 1: If so, Replace it with parts from a junkyard? If so. Wouldnt it make more sense to replace the whole axle instead of tearing into this one?
Option 2: Order the parts I need for repair from a parts outlet?
I have never done a rear end before. I have a service manual and of course the internet. I am really looking for the best road to follow. I would consider my mechanical skill lever moderate.
Thanks.

Your axle shafts are still good probably. Ditto your spider gears. And if the bad pinion bearing didn't damage the housing, it'll still be fine.
Looks like you'll need a pinion and ring gear set and a l/s carrier. Probably l/s clutches and some seals while you're at it.
Never seen one that bad before.

Axle shafts are good. Guess I need to pull out the differential and check the housing. So far summit has the best price on replacement parts, believe it or not. Any suggestions on other places to look? Junkyard wants to much in my area. For about a 100 more I can have all new parts. Thanks for the insight.
