94 f150 goes in and out of overdrive at speed
Just bought a 94 f150. Automatic, 4wd, 5.0. Seems to have plenty of power at low speeds but I'm wondering if power drops off at higher speeds. I especially notice it goes in and out of overdrive on any hill, even a mild one. No check engine light.

I had I pickup 94 f150 5.0l 4x4 reg cab the gear had 3.31 that pickup would jump around 3-4 all they time at highway speeds and windy days it never found 4th. The axle gears are to high making the pickup work. The 5.0l makes the best power at high rpms. 3rd gear on the highway it would be 85 mph at 3500 rpms. The truck would go to 4500rpms easy. Never knew how fast I was going.

Hmm. I'll check the gear ratio tomorrow. The way the old girl jumps gears I'm afraid I'm going to go through plates/bands. Also noticed when I press the button on the end of the shifter to make it so it doesn't go into overdrive the light doesn't come on and it goes into overdrive anyway. The 20 amp breaker is good that controls because I swapped it out with one I know is good.

My axle code is 17 which sounds like it translates to 3.31 open. From what I'm hearing it sounds like the only way around this is a 5.8l swap. Sure is a pain in the *** having it slip in and out of overdrive.

The 5.8l only has 20 more hp. Put 3.55 or 3.73 gears in it. Or do what I did hit a bmw and get a different pickup with the right gears.

If you have oversize tires, you can reprogram your speedometer to compensate for them which will put your shift points back where they belong.
That's the "P" in psom - programmable. That might help - if you have oversize tires. Door sticker will tell you what they're supposed to be.
