Default 91 4.9 starts then dies right away

ok so like i said the truck starts and runs very rich for a few seconds then dies. i can't read the codes because the previous owner butchered the wiring. i have replaced the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs, new gaskets in the intake and throttle body. new fuel pressure regulator. I'm at a complete loss at what to look at next. anyone got any ideas?

Fix the wiring so you can read codes.

You could start a bunch of threads indicating the same problem? The best way would be to try and get some codes but if you can't it'll just be a bit harder. Have you checked how the intake valves are adjusted? What's your compression at? If its running rich that means there's not enough air with the fuel. I would start there next before I replace anymore stuff.

Yea I got one. And obviously you didn't know because after you found out you had good fuel pressure you would have checked the intake valves and tested your compression. But you probably did that already before you got done playing mechanic and ran for help on the internet. Right?
