Peace of mind, zero possibility of wiping a lobe, room for error during the break in process and no need for special oil or additives.

I thought aftermarket cams had a smaller base circle, so regardless you'd need new pushrods. With a flat tappet cam you'd probably want new lifters also. So your most of the way there already.
There was recently a thread where a member just upgraded to the latest truck cam from the wrecking yard. Quite a few vehicles use that cam, it's really a inexpensive upgrade. That latest truck cam does well for towing ect and still gets good mpg numbers. 94 - 96 F150 and 96 up Explorer 302.

Yep, it's a much better piece than that flat tappet cam. That would be the way to go if cost is a concern.
