87 f150 4.9L 2WD tranny swap?
Hi,
I just purchased a 87'f150 w/4.9L, 4-speed w/ 60K. I didn't think the granny gear or the high rpm on the top end would be such a issue for me. I've read different info on this forum and need advice / suggestions. I'm not hauling so the granny gear is a real pain. (someone told me to just start in 2nd gear? doesn't seem logical?) Also, the rpm is very high and limits me to about 65mph on the highway. Is there a way out? Can I change the gears or the tranny? If so, with what and what else do I change. I could only find post for a 5-speed change for a 4x4 but not for a 2WD. I don't have to have the manual...I'll keep if easier, and would do a automatic if that's the answer or easier. Or can I do a 5-speed swap and if so which trans and what's entailed?
I'd just like to have a quicker take off and more room on the top end.
If you have done this before, known somebody that has, or the seasoned professional, you input is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks in advance for your comments!
*Also, if you think that I'm over thinking this and I'll eventually like or get use to this set up....... tell me of your experience with the same setup.
Thanks again,
Mike

It sounds like you have what's referred to as a "Farmer 4". 1st is actually low gear, and "2nd" is your first gear. Low, or granny gear should be used for starting with heavy loads. However after you said that you top out at 65 it makes me think that somebody has changed the rear gear already. I want to say that most of those trucks came with a 2.73 ratio rear end or something close to that. I could be wrong on that though. You can swap in an automatic fairly easy if you plan on still having a floor shifter. There will be some needed modification, but it's 10 times easier going to an auto than the other way around. Look into gear sets for your year of truck and axle. Then look at used/rebuilt automatics and weigh the prices for what you are wanting to do.
Also, what size tires are on it? You could always go to a taller tire and even out the final drive.

Manuellabour247;
Great info. I will check the gears out and do another test run tomorrow. I hope that I was just a little distracted by the newness of everything and over estimated the rpm at 65. I will start in 2nd and see how that goes. I'll get back to the thread and get additional information as needed. Your reply explains and lot. I'll be back.....
