Default 1994 f150 xlt 4x4 front end grinding

I recently picked up a 94 f150 with the 5.0 efi in it but have started to notice this grinding sound coming from the front end it seems like. Mainly happens after accelerating when I let off the gas and start to coast. It is almost as if the truck is trying to put itself into 4wd because sometimes it kind of "lurches" after the grinding. It has manual locking hubs so that rules out the iwe solenoid too, not sure if its the transfer case or what. Please help!
Thanks

Same year & model here except that mine has the automatic locking hubs.

Once it gets up around 40 mph there's a whirring noise like a bearing spinning then a "bang" with something engaging or disengaging.

Sometimes there's a nasty shake on the driver's side tire.

There was about of 75 deg of play in the steering wheel so i knew that the steering box had to be replaced. Replaced that & checked the rest of the front end. It looks reasonably good so it's less likely to be in the steering.

Point being: Even though the 4 WD is disengaged the drive shaft going from the pumpkin to the driver's side wheel seems to be turning at least some of the time.

Combine that with rusty U- joints & dry pavement and all kinds of things can happen.

At least that's the current idea of what might be going on.

Ok maybe this is what im looking for. i have a 94 xlt 4x4 5.0. It doesnt grind much maybe when turning into a parking spot really hard. BUT...when you put it in 4x4 its horrible sounding. i got underneath and the front drive shaft is pretty loose, turns back and forth. which im guessing is u-joints? or a cv axle? how do you determine which one? or buying the whole assembly comes with u-joints? idk Im not really good with cars. basic

You don't have CV joints.

Ok so not cv axle. How do I determine between u joints or the whole assembly? My drive shaft has lots of play up front. Whole assembly= 300$ u joints= 15$ a piece

The u-joint is the wear item. Unless the u-joint is so bad it damaged the shaft you don't need it.
