Default 1994 140k miles Trans pan bad leak, Change it or no?

I got a 1994 f150 with a 5.0 and EO4D trans. The pan gasket is leaking very badily. The truck has 140k miles and I don't know when the last time the fluid has been changed, if ever. I have owned it for a year and put less then 3k miles on it. Is it ok if I change the gasket? Or should I try some rtv. I've heard mixed beliefs on this subject but no threads about a trans with a really bad gasket leak.

Pull the pan down and after clean up put a straight edge over the bolt holes in the gasket side and see how distorted the pan is. You can use a hammer and a hard surface and straighten up the mating surface so you have a better seal. Replace the filter and gasket, use RTV on the pan side of the gasket, I usually glue the gasket to the pan, set all my bolts thru the gasket/pan and let it sit for awhile. This will keep the gasket from moving around while you're mounting it back up to the tranny.

NEVER use RTV on transmissions, it can damage the transmission. Change the filter and gasket, make sure the filter kit has a rubber gasket.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. So basically doing a trans flush on an older trans can cause issues but just draining the oil is fine?

New fluid is never a bad idea.

I know regular RTV is bad. But what about Transmission RTV?

I use sealant to hold my gasket in place, I'm not sure how that would damage the tranny.

The RTV oozes out when you tighten the bolts, and inside it can clog the transmission passages.
